Cypress LLP is representing Grupo Cultural AfroReggae

Cypress LLP is representing Grupo Cultural AfroReggae — a Brazilian not-for-profit organization that promotes cultural and social entrepreneurism, music and the arts justice programs in the favelas (i.e., slums) — in a lawsuit against Google Inc. The lawsuit alleges that Google used, without proper attribution, AfroReggae’s idea of digitally mapping the vast, poverty-ridden favelas surrounding Rio de Janeiro. Previously, the favelas were literally “gray space” on digital maps. The lawsuit alleges that Google used AfroReggae’s idea to promote itself during the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The Daily Journal, a California legal newspaper, recently wrote about the lawsuit – you can read it here.
