Art Appreciation & Legal Social

On Wednesday, February 26th, members of the Executive Committee for the Entertainment Law and Intellectual Property Section (ELIPS) of the LA County Bar Association gathered to mingle and discuss hot topics on art & law issues. The evening was co-hosted by Bob Muller, Partner at Cypress LLP. The event featured Bob’s interview of special guest, Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s General Counsel, Fred Goldstein, on recent topics of interest, such as LACMA’s involvement in amicus briefing before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals concerning the copyright infringement lawsuit between the artists Richard Prince and Patrick Cariou that involved a significant ruling under the fair use doctrine. Also discussed was the topic of Max Beckmann’s “degenerate” artwork, Bar, Brown, displayed at LACMA, the recent story about the discovery of numerous works of “degenerate art” in the possession of Cornelius Gurlitt, son of Hildebrand Gurlitt — the Nazi-era art dealer who acquired Bar, Brown from Beckmann — and how LACMA came to possess Bar, Brown.
